Then I found out about the food circle at McKittrick. Thanks to our Dairy provider Tammy, I now have access to raw whole milk & butter at a price I can afford - it's very convenient for me to pick up at the Merck every two weeks. It's wonderful! NO hormones, no antibiotics. I can get some really super Elderberry products from River Hills. I am looking forward to getting to know more of the producers at the food circle and purchasing as much as I can afford on a pretty fixed income.
This year we will start building our "retirement" garden, a few raised beds to start with - so we don't have to bend so much & so we can reintroduce ourselves to "square foot gardening". We had 4 beds when the kids were little, where our X-tra large garage sits now. We grew broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, Brussels sprouts & some things that didn't do as well. We like the square foot method because it's easy to plan, and good for beginning gardeners & they look really neat too. I consider myself a beginner again because it's been over 10 years and we will be gardening in a whole new place on our property.
As an admitted computer nurd, I think I am going to enjoy taking you along on my journey to become more sustainable on our little piece of heaven, with a garden, good friends & good food leading the way. If you see me asking stupid questions, just don't be mean. I have probably spent 6 hours already with my head in an animation program - my favorite avocation, I have a hard time thinking garden after that.
(although I can make you one heck of a 3D Computer Graphic garden)
